Advert Design

Now that funds are in place to purchase a magazine advert, a dedicated team has been working day and night around the clock (literally) to organize, collaborate and design the advert to completion. Two concepts are being discussed and edited to make them as effective as possible as we speak.

While we have these couple of designs in consideration, we've decided to open the offer to design the ad to the whole fandom, in case there are any graphic artists somewhere who didn't volunteer initially but has a ~fantastic design idea and either has time to make it, or at least describe it.

Specifications for advert design as set by Variety:

-High resolution PDF file
-Resolution for all artwork should be 266 dpi at 100%, images up to 300 dpi are fine.

Dimensions
Full-page : 10" x 13" (254mm x 330mm)
Half-page : 7.875" x 8.25" (200mm x 210mm)

http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=about_media

As set by The Hollywood Reporter:
-PDF/X1-a file
-Images must be at 300 dpi at 100% of final size.
-All rasterized files must be 300 dpi at 100%.
-Embed all necessary fonts in each PDF.
-Allow for 10% press gain in preparation of Grayscale materials.
-Solid black panels should not exceed 60% undertone.
-When type is reversed out, black must knockout lettering and trapping should spread to minimize registration error.
-Extremely fine lettering or thin lines should be limited to one color. For best registration, keep white rules reversing out of backgrounds to 2 points or thicker.

Dimensions
Full-page : 7.528" x 10.083"
Half-page : 5.597" x 6.75"

Copyright:
- No photos from the show (ie screencaps, promo photos, logos etc) for legal/copyright issues.
- Only FULL silhouettes can be used if using photos from the show, i.e., all black, only the outline can be seen.
- Any images from free public domain photo databases are allowed.

The advert will be printed in black and white.

The deadline for submissions is tonight, midnight EST.

I know this gives hardly any time at all, and we apologise for that. You'll have to be quickish. This is because we're working on an incredibly tight schedule. But we thought it would only be right to open this up to the public just in case one of you has a fab design.

You can post them here in the comments, or if you'd rather, email to me at katehughes91@googlemail.com

Also, donations are still being accepted. The current total is $8,000 and we need a minimum of $9,144 for two ads, a full page one in Variety, and a half-page in THR.

We have considered that, but the only reason why it wasn't looked into was due to copyright concerns involving pictures :\

I'm getting so excited to see the ad. AHHH this feels just like waiting for Christmas.

If we don't end up with enough for two ads, are we going with a full page in Variety, or is all that still being decided?

I'm, working on something simple. You really don't have to use it or even consder it. But I'm liking it and just wanted to help. But I'm wondering, what's the details that are to be put here:

We are still calling people at ABC to find out who would be the contact, so I advise keeping a PSD/file-with-layers, so you can update the text when we know for sure a name. I put that so you can have something in place, ready for when we know.

And thanks Specks, ily <3

I like the ideas people have been stating about using a NZ background and maybe for the text - if we can find the creator of those post cards, the way they did the font was very similar to the show and quite awesome. That would look great on the ad, but other than that, I don't really have anything constructive lol

I've been out of the Photoshopping game for quite a while now, but I thought I'd try to put together something just to do something helpful here. Here's a WIP of what I just threw together:

I also think you said it had to be black and white, so here's that:

Most readers have subscriptions I believe, since they're in the industry, but I believe you're able to order single magazines directly from them.

...I think I may have seen the weekly Variety edition once or twice in a Barnes & Noble before too. But I could be hallucinating.

Here's a little something I put together with the help of tarlanciel (who has a something of her own and still offered to help me put the finishing touches on this.) She is a goddess. I stand by that fact.

Anyway, I'd love comments/critique/whatever

Suggest not putting a name on the ad
Guys, I STRONGLY SUGGEST NOT putting the name of any Disney or ABC Studios executive on an ad in Variety (same goes for their email or phone number). The studio has been very supportive of the show, and you may only irritate the folks whose help you would need to revive SEEKER. I'm sure the message will be received by the entertainment community if you simply say, "Contact ABC Studios". It's not as if SyFy or some other cable channel won't know who to call. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Suggest not putting a name on the ad
Yep, we've already debated this - and most of us on further reflection agree that it might be a bad idea to put contact details. I'd hate for them to be spammed from over-zealous fans.
We're going to phone ABC to find out what they think - whether they would like a specific name in there or not - but if it's up to us, we probably will just have "Contact ABC Studios" now.
Thanks for your input!

Yes,
That's what I was talking about: conceptual and clean. Just an object that is related to the idea of the ad.

Black & White - Deadline -)
Hey there,
I'm so sad we don't have time. I have a small advertising agency here in Brazil and I could have asked my art directors to do the job, but it's night here now (23h35). So, I would like to give my opinion about some ideas you guys were talking about:
- If you have problems with copyright (NZ pictures or Seeker images) use something conceptual, for instance a sword over a white background (we need to look for clean layouts). I need to stop and think about (I'm a strategic planner not a creative). This site has free images http://www.sxc.hu/ that you can use. We can even do an alltype ad (only words very well distributed).
- I don't thin black & white is a good idea, aesthetically speaking. We need to use B&W for a good reason, with a purpose. Transform pictures from the characters to B&W in order to be able to use it is not enough.
- we don't want to look like amateurs. Jericho's ad was very professional.

I'm sorry If I'm being overbearing but I'm just trying to help.
I wish we had time for this.

I'm going to try to create something now and show it to you guys in a few hours.

=)

Re: Black & White - Deadline -)
Hi, I understand your point about it being black and white, but I believe our problem is that we cant afford a color ad :( Although I do agree silhoueted figures are sadly lookin kind of cheesey and amateurish :/ especially compared to the Jericho ad
